The Purpose of the Anointing
Part Two
Pastor Mark Stephens

Last week we began the teaching talking about the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord bringing instruction in wisdom, and humility. (Proverbs 15:33) We found out that a humble man was not necessarily quiet nor a loud man wasn't always arrogant. We found out that prideful folk do what they want, when they want and how they want to do it.

We also found out that we are to humble ourselves in our own estimation under God's mighty hand. (1 Peter 5:6) Another thing was that the younger must submit themselves to the elder and for all of us to be subject one to another. (1 Peter 5:5).

Lastly, we found out that when the anointing is upon you that it "paints" you. That the anointing is the Holy Ghost's personality overshadowing us, clothing us with His virtues, His character and His power.

Genesis 1:2 "And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters."

We are given the impression that He is poised to bring the words of creation to pass.

Luke 1:35 "And the angel answered and said unto her, the Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God."

Overshadow means to envelope in a haze of brilliancy. When you are facing an impossible situation all you need is the smearing or painting (the overshadowing) of the Holy Ghost and He will guarantee your victory!

Philippians 4:13 "I can do all thing through Christ which strengtheneth me."

When the power to get results arrives on the scene, the impossible becomes possible. Mark 9:23 says , "If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believes."

Tap into the anointing, not just a little but a lot. Psalm 23:5 says, "Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over."

As born again children of God the anointing abides in each of us. When we lay hands on the sick, the anointing should spill out of our cups on to them and bring healing. when we go to work or school, God's ability should overflow in to all that we do and make it outstanding.

Elisha was so outstanding that after he was dead a dead man was thrown into the grave with him and as soon as the dead man came into contact with his bones, the dead man was made alive. (see 2 Kings 13:21) Peter's shadow when falling upon someone that was sick they were healed because of the anointing upon his life. (Acts 5:15, 16.) Many were healed by handkerchiefs sent out by Paul (Acts 19:12).

Colossians 1:9-11 "For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and long-suffering with joyfulness;"

We have already found out that the anointing is theh personality of the Holy Spirit. Does that personality have traits much like our human personalities? Yes!!!

Isaiah 11:2 "And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord."

All seven of these are ingredients of the personality of the Holy Spirit. They work together to give you the power to get results.

John 15:8 "Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples."

If God is ever going to be able to operate through you and I as He wants, we must come to understand God's purpose for the anointing. The anointing when used to glorify God, brings great power. The purpose of this power is not simply to produce good singing, good preaching, or even amazing healings, though these things will come as a result of the anointing. Nor is the purpose of the anointing to cause you to shake all over, fall out under the power of God or feel goose bumps, though those will happen also. The true purpose of the anointing is to produce victory in our lives so that God may be glorified in the earth and in our life.

2 Peter 1:3 "According as His divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him that hath called us to glory and virtue."

The divine power is the anointing that dwells in us in the person of the Holy Spirit. when a person is hooked up and fully submitted to the anointing, they will do everything they are called to do, and do it perfectly.

Another product of the anointing is restoration. 1 Samuel 10:2 (please read) Three days earlier Saul had lost two donkeys and went to the prophet for directions. The anointing came and he was restored what had been lost.

If you have lost something; your dignity, strength, your family, friends, your hope or even your will to live, whatever it is, you can experience supernatural restoration if you will get hooked into the anointing. Whatever is missing in your life will be restored to you once you have been smeared and painted (overshadowed) with the power of the Holy Spirit.

1 Samuel 10:3 (continue in your bible please) shows another product of the anointing-"progress" (he went forward). The anointing will you give you the ability to make supernatural progress. When you are anointed you go forward, not backward. Praise God!!!

The Bible says that we should move from faith to faith, glory to glory in all areas of our lives. God hasn't called you to backslide, rather He has called you to "frontslide". If you are not moving upward, then you need to get plugged in to the power socket of the anointing.

1 Samuel 10:4 gives us another aspect of the anointing---favor. When God's favor is upon you it will cause you to receive thing that were not even requested.

1 Samuel 10:5, 6. (continue your reading) You will be changed into another man by the power of the anointing!!! When the anointing comes upon you there will be a change of status. You are not lowly mild-mannered Clark Kent any longer. Now you are Superman!!! But as God's "superman" NOTHING can harm you, not even kryptonite!!! Hallelujah!!!

Psalm 92:10-15 (read this passage for yourself if you will)

10---You shall be anointed with fresh oil---we need that each day: fresh oil (anointing)
11---The anointing will give you new vision and the anointing will open your spiritual ears to hear what the Lord is saying.
12---A palm tree has deep roots to search for water in dry places. The anointing will cause you to be rooted and grounded in the Word so that we find refreshing in those dry places.
13---It is Gods desire that we bring forth fruit and that our fruit remain.
14---The anointing will bring forth a mighty harvest. It's our heritage as His covenant children. Remember Caleb taking his mountain at 85 years of age.
15---The anointing will purify your life and reveal that purity to the world.

2 Corinthians 13:14 "The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all.

You will be established in seven foundational areas of your life when you are submitted to the anointing.

1. Get under the covering of an anointed ministry. (Law of increase by association)
2. Develop an honest prayer life. God wants you to be truthful, not religious. He doesn't care how loud you shout HALLELUJAH, He's concerned with your heart.
3. Get a fresh infilling of the Spirit daily. You have to refill your car with gas regularly. It's the same with us; we need "fresh gas" regularly.
4. Repent. There must be an element of repentance in our lives if we are to operate in the anointing. Learn to repent!
5. Learn to yield to the Holy Spirit. This is difficult for Christians.
Romans 6:13, 16 "Neither yield ye your member as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. (16) Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?"
6. Fellowship with the Holy Spirit 2 Corinthians 13:4 "For though he was crucified through weakness, yet he liveth by the power of God. For we also are weak in Him, but we shall live with him by the power of God toward you."
7. Be consistent. If you don't see results immediately, don't stop. Continue on until you receive what God has promised. (Don't grow weary in well doing)

Matthew 22:27, 38 We are commanded to love God more than anything else. How do you cultivate a love relationship with the Father? Searching His Word. Jesus said 14:9 "Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me . . .he that hath seen me has seen the Father."

How badly do you want this anointing? How much are you willing to give to walk in this anointing? If your answer is WHATEVER IT TAKES, then find time today to get into His glorious presence and receive from Him this same anointing that has been you have read about today.
